Saint-Étienne have announced the signing of Thierno Ballo from Austrian side Wolfsberger on a four-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2030. The 24-year-old winger, who can also play as an attacking midfielder or centre-forward, joins after a season-long loan at English Championship side Millwall. During his time at Millwall, Ballo scored one goal and registered six assists in 35 appearances across all competitions, according to club records.
Ballo, born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and an Austrian international with one cap, developed through the academies of Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea before spells at Rapid Vienna (13 matches) and Wolfsberger (110 matches, 32 goals, 18 assists). He established himself as a key player for Wolfsberger over several seasons, demonstrating consistent goal contributions and versatility. His loan spell at Millwall provided him with valuable experience in English football, showcasing his ability to adapt to a different league.
Loïc Perrin, Saint-Étienne’s sporting director, described Ballo as a “player with an offensive profile who puts in a lot of activity, capable of repeating runs throughout a match.” Perrin added that Ballo’s relentless work rate and determination were key factors in the club’s decision to pursue him, as stated in the official club announcement. The signing represents a significant addition to Saint-Étienne’s attacking options as they prepare for the upcoming Ligue 1 season.
The estimated transfer fee is €3 million. Ballo is the fourth signing of the summer for Saint-Étienne, following the arrivals of Sohaib Naïr, Jakob Breum, and Mamour Ndiaye. Manager Ian Cathro will be hoping the new additions can bolster the squad ahead of their first friendly of the season against FC Biel-Bienne (Switzerland) on Saturday evening. The acquisition of Ballo indicates Saint-Étienne’s ambition to strengthen their attacking line and compete effectively in the French top flight.
