Barcelona have agreed to a two-year contract extension with defender Andreas Christensen, according to reports from MD. The deal is somewhat unexpected given the player’s limited playing time over the past two seasons at the Camp Nou.
Christensen has struggled with injuries since joining Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022, making only 23 appearances in the subsequent two campaigns. He featured for just 515 minutes during the recently concluded season. Despite this, reports emerged in January that club President Joan Laporta was keen to offer the 30-year-old a new deal, and manager Hansi Flick has publicly expressed his confidence in the Danish international.
Negotiations between Barcelona and Christensen have been ongoing for months, with the club offering a significant reduction in salary as part of the new agreement. Christensen reportedly had offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia this summer, but ultimately expressed a desire to remain with Barcelona and compete for a role under Flick. The defender is aiming to play a more significant part in the team next season.
The extension for Christensen may influence Barcelona’s transfer plans for the summer window, potentially leading them to avoid a major investment in a new centre-back. Barcelona already have Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Gerard Martin available in that position. Eric Garcia has also been mentioned as a potential option at right-back. Previous links to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni have reportedly cooled off as a result of this development. Christensen has made 97 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions since arriving from Chelsea.
This move secures depth in a key position for Barcelona and allows Flick to work with a player he clearly values, though Christensen will need to overcome his recent injury issues to justify the contract extension.
