Barcelona are planning to offer forward Ferran Torres a contract renewal this summer, according to a report from Sport. The decision comes after Torres reportedly issued an ultimatum to the club: sign a new deal, or he will depart as a free agent when his current contract expires next summer.
The 26-year-old has become a key figure in the Barcelona attack, particularly following Robert Lewandowski’s announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the season. Torres has scored 21 goals and provided two assists in 48 appearances this season, bringing his two-year goal tally for the club to 40.
Torres joined Barcelona from Manchester City for a reported €55 million in December 2021, but had previously been linked with a potential player-plus-cash exchange deal involving Julian Alvarez. However, the club now appears committed to retaining his services.
Barcelona’s change of heart is reportedly based on Torres’ consistent performance and his positive influence within the squad. Club officials believe he has earned a new deal through his goalscoring record, and manager Hansi Flick has praised his contribution to the team spirit. Torres also maintains a close relationship with midfielder Pedri Gonzalez, with the pair frequently travelling to training together.
Frenkie de Jong recently revealed he had previously been pressured to leave the club, stating he stopped speaking to the press during a period of intense scrutiny regarding his future. The situation highlights the club’s recent financial difficulties and willingness to consider player sales, but it appears Torres has successfully negotiated a stronger position. Securing Torres to a new contract would provide Barcelona with stability in the attacking line and avoid losing a valuable asset for free.
