Rafael Leão has indicated his desire to leave Serie A, openly discussing a potential move to the Premier League in a recent interview with Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV. The Milan forward spoke candidly about a difficult past season, tactical issues, and his future ambitions.
Leão stated he is seeking a “new challenge” after winning two trophies with Milan, believing that the English Premier League or La Liga would better showcase his talents. He expressed particular enthusiasm for the prospect of testing himself against the high level of competition in England, suggesting it would elevate his game. This declaration fuels existing transfer speculation and casts doubt on his long-term future at the San Siro.
The 25-year-old also detailed a physically challenging season, revealing he played for four to five months with a pubalgia injury while being deployed in a position that did not suit his strengths. He criticised the tactical setup under previous manager Massimiliano Allegri, stating it did not allow him to effectively impact matches. Leão felt constrained by the system and that his potential was not fully utilized.
Despite these difficulties, Leão acknowledged the significant influence of Zlatan Ibrahimović on his development, describing the veteran striker as a demanding but ultimately beneficial mentor. He noted Ibrahimović’s uncompromising approach, which, while potentially intimidating, kept him focused and motivated. The Portuguese international highlighted Ibrahimović’s impact both on and off the pitch.
Leão also discussed his preferred position, differentiating between playing as a winger and a second striker. He believes the modern game demands greater goalscoring output from attacking players, and that playing closer to goal as a second striker requires more directness and decisiveness. He acknowledged a need to improve his finishing and overall numbers to become a more complete forward. This positional flexibility, he argues, makes him a more unpredictable threat to opposing defenses.
Leão joined Milan from Lille in 2019 and has become a key player for the club, contributing significantly to their Serie A title win in 2022. However, his recent comments suggest a growing dissatisfaction with his current situation and a strong desire for a new environment.
