Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund are leading the chase for Union Berlin centre-back Danilho Doekhi, who is set to become a free agent at the end of June, according to sources. The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in the Union Berlin defence for the past two seasons, playing every minute of Bundesliga action and contributing seven goals.
Doekhi’s contract expires next month, opening the door for a host of clubs to pursue his signature. Leeds manager Daniel Farke is known to be a long-time admirer of the player, having tracked him since his time at Norwich City, and views him as an ideal addition to his squad due to his height, composure, and versatility in either a back three or four. Interest from Leeds dates back to the January transfer window, but Doekhi opted to remain with Union Berlin to increase his options upon reaching free agency.
Borussia Dortmund have also entered the fray, seeing Doekhi as a cost-effective reinforcement for their defensive line. The German club are able to offer regular European football, a key factor for the Dutchman. However, the competition is fierce, with several other clubs from across Europe and beyond expressing interest. Multiple Saudi Pro-League sides have approached Doekhi, attracted by his profile and free agent status, though the player is currently prioritizing a move to remain in Europe.
Besiktas have also enquired about Doekhi, and are prepared to offer a substantial wage package. Other potential suitors include Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, PSV Eindhoven, and several teams from the Bundesliga and Serie A, although interest from these clubs is currently considered less concrete. Doekhi’s reliability, aerial prowess, and ability to score from set-pieces make him an attractive prospect for many clubs. Leeds United have been long-term suitors and remain in contention, but will face a significant challenge to secure his signature given the competition from Dortmund and other European clubs. A decision is expected in the coming weeks.
