Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement with Olympique Lyon for the permanent transfer of winger Afonso Moreira, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Kicker. The Bundesliga club are set to pay a fee in excess of €30 million for the 21-year-old Portuguese international.
Kicker reports the total transfer package, including potential bonuses, will slightly exceed €30 million, while Romano specifies a total fee of €32 million. The transfer is expected to be officially announced by both clubs in the coming days. Leverkusen have been proactive in the transfer market following their impressive Bundesliga title win last season, and Moreira represents a further investment in their attacking options.
Moreira joined Lyon from Vitória de Guimarães in 2022, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the French club. Last season, the winger enjoyed a breakout campaign, directly contributing to 19 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. He scored eight goals and provided 11 assists, demonstrating his ability to both create and finish chances. His performances attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, but Leverkusen moved quickly to secure his signature.
Lyon, meanwhile, are undergoing a period of transition following a disappointing Ligue 1 campaign. The sale of Moreira will provide the club with significant funds to reinvest in the squad. They finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season, missing out on European qualification, and will be hoping to rebuild under a new manager. The departure of a key attacking talent like Moreira will undoubtedly be a blow, but the financial injection will be welcomed.
Moreira’s arrival at Leverkusen will provide competition for places in the wide areas, adding depth to Xabi Alonso’s squad. His pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal will be valuable assets as Leverkusen look to defend their Bundesliga title and compete in the Champions League. The move represents a significant step up in Moreira’s career, offering him the opportunity to play at the highest level of European football.
