Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of 16-year-old midfielder Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha BSC, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday. The move sees Eichhorn join Die Werkself on a permanent deal, with Leverkusen reportedly beating competition from several other prominent European clubs, including RB Leipzig and Liverpool, for his signature.
Leverkusen’s managing director for sport, Simon Rolfes, expressed the club’s delight at securing the young talent. According to Rolfes, Leverkusen had been in contact with Eichhorn and his family for over a year, building a strong relationship that ultimately proved decisive. He stated that Eichhorn believes Leverkusen provides the ideal environment for him to develop into a “top player” in the Bundesliga, and that positive discussions with head coach Carles Martínez further solidified the agreement.
Eichhorn himself cited Leverkusen’s reputation for nurturing young talent as a key factor in his decision. The defensive midfielder explained that he was impressed by the club’s track record of successfully integrating young players into their first team, and is eager to follow a similar path. He expressed his enthusiasm for taking the next steps in his career at a “top European club” like Bayer 04.
Eichhorn has progressed through the youth ranks at Hertha BSC, establishing himself as a promising talent in German youth football. While specific financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, the competition for his signature suggests Leverkusen may have invested significantly in securing his services. The signing represents a further commitment to developing young players at Leverkusen, a strategy that has yielded success in recent years with the emergence of talents like Florian Wirtz.
The addition of Eichhorn bolsters Leverkusen’s midfield options and provides further depth to their squad as they compete in both the Bundesliga and European competitions. This move signals Leverkusen’s intent to continue building a team capable of challenging for top honors both domestically and on the continent.
