Inter are prioritizing the potential signing of Cagliari wing-back Marco Palestra, with the deal’s progression heavily linked to the future of current Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries, according to reports in Italy. The Nerazzurri value Palestra between €40 and €50 million, a figure that could significantly shape their entire summer transfer window.
Atalanta, now under new sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, are expected to be firm in their valuation of Palestra, who impressed during his time with Cagliari and recently earned his first caps for the Italian national team, appearing in two matches. The 22-year-old’s performances have established him as a key asset for the Bergamo club, and a sale would represent a significant financial gain.
The situation surrounding Dumfries is central to Inter’s plans. The Dutch international has a release clause of €25 million valid throughout the month of July, a period during which he will be representing the Netherlands at the upcoming World Cup. Dumfries has a history of performing well on major international stages, scoring goals at both Euro 2022 and the 2022 World Cup, as well as reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2024, totaling 11 goals for the Orange.
Palestra’s versatility is also a factor in Inter’s interest. He has demonstrated the ability to play as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation or as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 system, his natural position. At Cagliari, he thrived under manager Fabio Pisacane, ranking second in the entire Serie A for successful dribbles. While he would initially compete for the right-wing-back spot at Inter, his adaptability could prove valuable if coach Simone Inzaghi opts to change formations during matches.
Should Dumfries depart, Inter would also need to determine the future of Luis Henrique, who has also been linked with a move away from the club. Henrique, who arrived for around €25 million last year, has not fully convinced the Inter coaching staff and the club are open to offers. Inter’s pursuit of Palestra represents a significant investment in a promising young talent, and would solidify their options on the right flank.
