Inter Milan have triggered their buy-back clause to re-sign midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic from Club Brugge, effectively ending reported interest from several Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. The Serie A side will pay just over £20million to bring the 20-year-old back to the San Siro, according to TEAMtalk sources.
Stankovic enjoyed a successful season with Club Brugge, helping the Belgian side secure the league title and further establishing his reputation as a promising talent in European football. This form attracted attention from England, with scouts from Tottenham and United regularly monitoring his progress throughout the season. Arsenal and Chelsea were also reported to have conducted checks on the player as part of their recruitment plans.
Despite the Premier League interest, a return to Inter always appeared likely, with sources suggesting the club held the strongest position to secure his signature. The move carries particular significance due to Stankovic’s family connection to the Nerazzurri; his father, Dejan Stankovic, is a club legend having spent nearly a decade at the San Siro during a highly successful period for the club.
While Dejan was known as an attacking midfielder, Aleksandar has developed into a more defensive-minded player, operating as a dynamic holding midfielder capable of dictating play from deeper positions. Inter believe the timing is now right to integrate him into the first-team squad, having previously allowed him to gain experience through loan spells with Luzern and Club Brugge.
Sources indicate that Stankovic was receptive to a move to the Premier League, viewing the interest from Tottenham and United positively. However, the opportunity to relaunch his career with Inter Milan proved too appealing to resist. The move allows Stankovic to return to a familiar environment and potentially follow in his father’s footsteps at one of Italy’s biggest clubs.
