Liverpool made a mistake in allowing Harvey Elliott to leave the club, according to former chief executive Keith Wyness. The 23-year-old spent the recent season on loan at Aston Villa, but the club did not trigger the obligation to buy included in the agreement. Wyness believes that Elliott possesses qualities currently lacking at Anfield and that a promoted Premier League side may now attempt to sign him.
Elliott’s loan spell at Villa saw limited playing time, with a total of 284 minutes on the pitch throughout the season. This lack of opportunity prevented the permanent transfer from materialising, despite Aston Villa enjoying a successful campaign, winning the Europa League and finishing fourth in the Premier League. Unai Emery evidently did not deem Elliott a consistent enough contributor to warrant a permanent deal.
Despite the limited game time, Elliott demonstrated his ability with direct involvement in eight goals in 28 appearances for Liverpool during the 2024-25 season. This suggests a player capable of making a significant impact when given the chance, a fact Wyness highlighted when speaking to Football Insider. He stated that Liverpool contacts he has spoken with agree Elliott has a “heart and ability” missing from the current squad.
Liverpool endured a disappointing season, finishing fifth in the Premier League and failing to progress in any major competitions, despite a significant £450million spend on new players. The departure of key players like Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold, alongside Elliott’s loan move, did not yield the desired results. While a return to Liverpool appears unlikely, Elliott’s talent suggests he will prove to be a valuable asset for whichever club secures his signature. His need for regular football is paramount at this stage of his career.
