Liverpool are reportedly increasing their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as speculation mounts regarding Alisson Becker’s potential transfer to Juventus this summer, according to TEAMtalk. Alisson, who arrived at Anfield from Roma in 2018 for a fee of £66.8 million, has been a pivotal figure in Liverpool’s success, securing six major honours including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.
However, with his current contract set to expire in just over a year, the 33-year-old is increasingly linked with a move to Serie A, with sources indicating a growing confidence that Juventus will secure his signature. The Italian club have reportedly offered Alisson a lucrative long-term contract, a proposal Liverpool may be able to match but currently seem unwilling to pursue. Discussions between Alisson and Juventus are said to be progressing positively, with the Brazilian reportedly intrigued by the prospect of a new challenge.
As a result, Liverpool’s ownership group, FSG, are actively exploring potential replacements for Alisson. Martinez has emerged as a standout option, with the club admiring his leadership, mentality, and experience. The 33-year-old’s performances for both Aston Villa and Argentina have reportedly impressed Liverpool’s recruitment team. However, Aston Villa may be willing to consider offers for Martinez, who is one of their highest earners with a contract running until 2029, as they seek to achieve financial flexibility.
Villa have already begun identifying potential replacements for Martinez, with Manchester City’s James Trafford among the goalkeepers they have enquired about. While Liverpool also rate Giorgi Mamardashvili, concerns remain about his readiness to immediately assume the number one role at a club of Liverpool’s stature. The arrival of new manager Arne Slot may also influence the club’s goalkeeping plans, as he assesses the current squad and identifies areas for improvement. Slot recently acknowledged that the club makes transfer decisions with purpose, hinting at potential changes this summer. A departure for Alisson could leave Liverpool needing an experienced replacement, and Martinez is seen as a strong candidate to fill that void.
