Tottenham Hotspur will not be exercising their option to make James Wilson’s loan move from Hearts permanent, according to reports from Edinburgh News. The club had a £2.5million option to buy the 19-year-old striker, but have decided against triggering it despite a late push to secure his signature over Arsenal in the winter transfer window.
Hearts manager Derek McInnes had previously revealed that Arsenal were in talks with Wilson before Tottenham intervened, ultimately leading the player to choose a move to north London on Deadline Day. Some reports even suggested Tottenham’s pursuit was motivated by a desire to retaliate against Arsenal for their successful signing of Eberechi Eze last summer.
Wilson arrived at Spurs with an injury-hit attacking line, and was initially included in several first-team matchday squads, indicating a degree of faith from the coaching staff. However, the Scottish forward did not make a senior appearance for Tottenham during his loan spell. He did feature for the club’s youth sides, scoring four goals in eight appearances in Premier League 2 and helping the Under-21s reach the play-off semifinals.
Despite the initial excitement surrounding the transfer, McInnes had publicly questioned whether a move to Tottenham was the right step for Wilson at this stage in his career. In February, he stated that he believed Wilson was better suited to continuing his development with regular playing time at Hearts, rather than potentially being limited to academy football at a larger club. McInnes had previously acknowledged Wilson’s desire to explore the Tottenham opportunity despite his preference for the player to remain with Hearts.
Wilson has scored eight goals in 45 senior appearances for Hearts, establishing himself as a promising talent in the Scottish Premiership. His return to Tynecastle provides a boost to McInnes’ squad as they aim to challenge Celtic and Rangers’ dominance. It remains to be seen if Arsenal will revisit their interest in Wilson during the summer transfer window. Tottenham, meanwhile, are reportedly focusing on alternative forward targets, including potential moves for strikers in LaLiga and the Premier League.
