Liverpool have been offered the opportunity to sign AZ midfielder Kees Smit, potentially disrupting Newcastle United’s pursuit of the Dutch talent, according to TEAMtalk sources. Newcastle had identified the 20-year-old as a key target, with some reports suggesting they were leading the chase, but Liverpool have now entered the fray.
Reports indicate that AZ are seeking a fee of €60 million (£52m) for Smit, who is considered one of the Netherlands’ brightest young prospects. Intermediaries have approached Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea, seeking a Premier League destination for the player, with Smit himself reportedly keen on a move to a more competitive league.
Newcastle’s interest in Smit stems from a desire to bolster their midfield options, potentially as a replacement for Sandro Tonali. However, Luke Edwards of The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are ‘not currently active’ in negotiations for Smit, though he advises supporters to ‘keep an eye on Liverpool’. This follows a recent pattern of Liverpool challenging Newcastle for transfer targets, having previously signed Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike from under their noses.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola is reportedly looking to strengthen his midfield this summer, with Smit among a list of potential recruits that includes Alex Scott, Adam Wharton, and Eduardo Camavinga. However, the club’s primary focus currently remains on securing a new winger, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande identified as their top target, though negotiations with the German club are proving difficult. Smit’s arrival would provide long-term quality in midfield, offering a dynamic presence and creative spark.
Smit has been a standout performer for AZ, attracting attention from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid. His potential arrival at Anfield would add further competition for places in a Liverpool midfield already undergoing a period of transition.
