Liverpool are monitoring the situation of Club Tijuana’s 17-year-old attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora, but will face significant competition from several of Europe’s top clubs, according to reports. The Merseyside club have reportedly made contact with Mora’s representatives, signalling their interest in the Mexican international who impressed at the recent World Cup.
Mora emerged as a breakout star during the tournament, making four appearances for Mexico as they reached the Round of 16. He has also established himself as a key player for Tijuana in Liga MX, registering 10 goals and three assists in 53 appearances for the club. Manchester United had previously tracked Mora, but have reportedly cooled their interest due to the anticipated high transfer fee.
Valuations are currently said to exceed €40million (£34m, $45m), per TEAMtalk sources, a figure that could increase following his World Cup performances. However, a transfer is not immediately possible as Mora recently signed a contract extension with Tijuana that runs until 2029, a deal that includes a structured exit strategy. Furthermore, FIFA regulations prevent him from joining a foreign senior team until he turns 18 in October 2026.
Several other prominent clubs are also vying for Mora’s signature, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and Ajax. Football Insider reports that interested clubs are likely to wait until January, closer to Mora’s 18th birthday, to formally launch a move. Reporter Pete O’Rourke stated that “all of Europe’s big guns” would likely be interested in the highly-rated Mexican prodigy.
The competition for Mora is expected to be fierce, with his potential arrival at any of these clubs representing a significant long-term investment. Securing his signature would provide a creative boost to any midfield, and his recent form suggests he has the potential to become a key player at the highest level.
