Liverpool have renewed their interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, according to reports from Brazilian news outlet Globo. The development comes after a previously agreed deal between Wolves and Atletico Madrid for the 25-year-old fell through, a collapse reportedly stemming from a transfer involving Real Madrid.
Globo reports that both Manchester United and Liverpool have contacted Wolverhampton to inquire about the pricing and potential structure of a deal for Gomes. Atletico Madrid had previously agreed to a €45 million transfer, but the agreement was cancelled following a move orchestrated by super-agent Jorge Mendes.
Mendes facilitated a deal to take Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid, despite Atletico Madrid having an agreement in place to sign the Portuguese midfielder. This angered Atletico’s management, leading them to abandon their pursuit of Gomes. The situation has now opened the door for Liverpool, who previously expressed interest in Gomes in March, and Manchester United to re-enter the fray.
Interestingly, Gomes himself publicly stated in 2022 his desire to play for Liverpool, saying, “Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have a great desire to play there.” The midfielder has earned 10 caps for Brazil and has become a key player for Wolves since joining the club. He has established himself as a dynamic presence in midfield, known for his energy and tackling ability.
The potential acquisition of Gomes would add further depth to Liverpool’s midfield options, particularly with the team continuing to evolve under manager Andoni Iraola. While Liverpool have already strengthened in midfield, adding a player of Gomes’s profile could provide valuable competition and tactical flexibility. A move for Gomes could also be influenced by the ongoing transfer activity of rival clubs, particularly Manchester United, who are also actively seeking midfield reinforcements.
