Arminia Bielefeld have confirmed the departure of manager Mitch Kniat after three years at the club, effective immediately. The 2. Bundesliga side announced the decision was reached by mutual agreement between Kniat and the club’s leadership, with assistant coaches Dani Jara and Janik Steringer also leaving their positions. The split comes after discussions revealed diverging visions for the club’s future.
Kniat, aged 40, joined Arminia Bielefeld in 2021 and oversaw a period of relative success, most notably guiding the team to the DFB-Pokal final last season. He also successfully steered the club back to the second division, solidifying his position as a capable manager within German football. His tenure was marked by a focus on developing a strong team spirit and tactical flexibility, qualities that resonated with the club’s supporters.
“I am grateful for this time and would like to thank all employees, management, the entire staff, our fans, and of course my players,” Kniat said in a statement released by the club. “It’s been a pleasure and a special experience working for this traditional club every single day.” The statement reflects a positive parting, despite the difference in long-term strategy.
Sporting director Michael Mutzel explained the reasoning behind the decision, stating that “After several discussions and a joint analysis, we also exchanged views on further development steps and realized that our future plans were not aligned.” Mutzel further elaborated that both parties agreed ending the collaboration now, following a successful relegation battle, was the most appropriate course of action. This suggests the decision wasn’t prompted by poor performance, but rather a strategic divergence.
Arminia Bielefeld will now begin the search for a new manager to lead the team forward. The club’s immediate focus will be on finding a candidate who shares their vision for sustained success in the 2. Bundesliga. Kniat’s departure leaves a void in the dugout, but the club hopes to quickly appoint a successor and maintain the positive momentum built during his time in charge.
