Liverpool are prepared to offer €60 million for Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, according to reports in Germany. The potential transfer comes after Sano impressed during his appearances for Japan at the recent World Cup, raising his profile amongst European clubs. Sport Bild reported on Wednesday that Mainz anticipate Sano departing this summer, with Liverpool leading the chase.
Sano joined Mainz in January 2024 from Kashima Antlers for a reported fee of €2.5 million, quickly establishing himself as a key player in the Bundesliga side. The 25-year-old primarily operates as a defensive midfielder, providing crucial protection to the back four and demonstrating a strong ability to break up play. His performances earned him a place in the Japan national team, where he featured prominently at the World Cup, further enhancing his reputation.
A transfer fee of €60 million would represent a significant profit for Mainz and shatter their existing transfer record. Currently, the club’s most expensive sale is Brajan Gruda’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this year for €31.5 million. Sano’s market value has already seen an increase, rising to an estimated €40 million by Transfermarkt in May, and is expected to climb further following his international performances.
Liverpool’s interest in Sano suggests a desire to reinforce their midfield options ahead of next season. The Reds have already been active in the transfer market, and adding a player of Sano’s qualities would provide manager Arne Slot with greater tactical flexibility. The move could allow Liverpool to evolve their midfield, adding a more defensively oriented player to complement their existing creative options. The potential acquisition of Sano could also signal a shift in Liverpool’s transfer strategy, focusing on identifying and securing promising talent from less prominent leagues.
