Atlético Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente has stated he would leave the club if Marcelino is appointed as the new manager, according to comments made on the COPE radio show, El Partidazo. Llorente expressed strong opposition to managers who enforce weight controls on players, describing the practice as “an aberration” and “slavery.”
The 29-year-old was unequivocal in his stance, stating he “couldn’t work with a coach like that.” Marcelino, known for his strict approach to player fitness and regular weigh-ins, has been linked with the Atlético job following the potential departure of current manager Diego Simeone. Llorente’s comments suggest a fundamental disagreement with Marcelino’s management style.
Llorente has been a key player for Atlético since joining from Real Madrid in 2019, primarily operating as a dynamic midfielder. He has become known for his versatility and energetic performances, contributing significantly to the team’s attacking and defensive transitions. Last season, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing six assists.
This is not the first time Llorente has publicly discussed his views on player wellbeing, often sharing his personal philosophies on physical and mental health. His opposition to weight controls stems from a belief in trusting players to manage their own bodies and focusing on overall performance rather than arbitrary numbers. The midfielder also indicated a preference for Luis Enrique as a potential successor to Simeone.
Should Marcelino arrive at the Wanda Metropolitano, Llorente’s departure would represent a significant loss for Atlético, potentially weakening their midfield options. It remains to be seen whether the club will prioritize finding a manager aligned with Llorente’s preferences or pursue a coach like Marcelino who prioritizes strict discipline and physical conditioning.
