Mainz 05 are in advanced negotiations with Como to secure Stefan Posch on a permanent transfer, according to Kicker. The Bundesliga club are keen to retain the Austrian international following a successful loan spell that began in January.
Posch joined Mainz on loan for the second half of the season and quickly became a regular feature in the side, making 20 appearances across all competitions. His performances have evidently impressed the Mainz coaching staff, leading to their desire to secure his services long-term. The initial loan deal did not include a purchase option, meaning the clubs must now agree on a transfer fee.
A fee in the region of mid to high single-digit millions is reportedly considered realistic by both parties. Como, recently under new ownership, may be willing to negotiate a reasonable fee to generate funds and continue their own squad rebuilding process. The Italian club gained promotion to Serie A in the 2023-24 season.
Posch, 27, has also been named in Austria’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures, demonstrating his continued importance to the national team. He previously played for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, joining in 2020 and making over 80 appearances before his move to Como last summer. The move to Mainz provided him with an opportunity to return to the Bundesliga and regain consistent playing time.
The potential permanent transfer would provide Mainz with a reliable option at right-back, strengthening their defensive options ahead of the new season. Securing Posch's signature would represent a positive outcome for both the player, who has found a comfortable environment in Mainz, and the club, who have identified a key target to bolster their squad.
