Manchester United are monitoring Sporting CP left-back Maxi Araujo, with several other prominent European clubs also showing interest, according to a report from A Bola. Atletico Madrid are reportedly leading the chase for the Uruguay international, with manager Diego Simeone identifying him as a key target.
However, United, along with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Juventus, have all made initial contact with Sporting to explore the possibility of a deal for the 26-year-old. Sporting are expected to demand a fee of around €80 million (£69m) for Araujo, though reports suggest he could be available for €50 million (£43m).
Araujo has enjoyed a productive season for Sporting, contributing seven goals and four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. He was initially recommended to United by former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, and the club continues to hold genuine interest, as confirmed in December.
The potential arrival of Araujo is linked to the expected departure of Tyrell Malacia, whose contract with United expires in June. Malacia has struggled for consistent playing time since joining the club in 2022, making only two senior appearances this season. United’s new ownership group, INEOS, are seeking a left-back who can provide competition for Luke Shaw, with Patrick Dorgu potentially being deployed in a more advanced role.
Araujo’s performances have reportedly impressed United officials, and the club may attempt to secure a deal before the upcoming Copa America tournament, fearing his value could increase if he performs well. United are also considering other options at left-back, including Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal, Alejandro Balde of Barcelona, and Lewis Hall of Newcastle United, but a move for Araujo appears to be a more realistic prospect.
