Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has received a significant boost, with Real Madrid reportedly unwilling to meet the Hammers’ £80 million valuation. According to a report in Spanish publication El Debate, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing his Portuguese compatriot to the Bernabeu, but the club will not pursue a deal at West Ham’s asking price.
United have already held talks with Fernandes’ representatives, and the player is understood to be ‘extremely keen’ on a move to Old Trafford. The Red Devils are also nearing the completion of a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva, and will compete in the Champions League next season under manager Michael Carrick. Initial offers from United are expected to be lower than £80 million, prompting what is anticipated to be extensive negotiations.
West Ham, recently relegated to the Championship, are reportedly determined to secure a substantial fee for Fernandes, who joined the club from Southampton in the summer of 2025. The London club will need to raise funds following their relegation, but El Debate reports that West Ham’s valuation is a major obstacle for Real Madrid, as “big English clubs will always pay more.”
Fernandes, 21, is currently under contract with West Ham until 2030. While Mourinho is said to be personally interested in the player, Real Madrid appear to be prioritizing other targets. This development significantly improves Manchester United’s chances of securing Fernandes’ signature, potentially bolstering their midfield options ahead of the new season. The successful acquisition of Fernandes would further strengthen United’s squad as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.
