Manchester United have decided against signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson, citing concerns over his current fitness levels, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils had agreed a €45 million deal with the Serie A club last month after a proposed transfer to Atletico Madrid collapsed due to difficulties in reaching an agreement with Atalanta.
United’s interest in the Brazilian international dates back to at least 2024, and personal terms with Ederson were never a barrier to the move. While a financial agreement with Atalanta was quickly reached, both clubs opted to delay a formal announcement, initially not due to Ederson’s subsequent inclusion as an injury replacement in the Brazil squad.
The delay stemmed from United’s desire to thoroughly assess Ederson’s fitness, as the 27-year-old has been dealing with a meniscus issue. The club wanted to ensure there was no lasting damage before committing to the transfer. Despite several days to complete the signing, updates were limited as Ederson underwent multiple medical examinations.
Today, United finalised the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Karl Darlow on a free transfer, but Ederson was notably absent from Carrington. Romano’s report confirms the deal is now completely off, with United unconvinced by his current physical condition. Ederson will now return to Atalanta, where the club reportedly has no concerns regarding his long-term fitness.
However, Ederson’s future at Atalanta remains uncertain, as he has only one year remaining on his contract. His agent has publicly stated his client intends to move clubs this year, leaving Atalanta with the choice of either finding a new buyer for a reduced fee or risking losing him as a free agent next summer. Further movement in this transfer saga is anticipated before the end of the transfer window in September, with other potential suitors likely to emerge for the Brazilian midfielder.
