Manchester United have been informed by a coach familiar with Mateus Fernandes that the midfielder’s potential is yet to be fully realised, as the club continues to explore a summer move for the 21-year-old. United are preparing for a return to Champions League football and are expected to be active in the transfer market, with a significant overhaul of the squad anticipated.
Fernandes, currently playing for Estoril, has attracted attention from several top clubs, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, following a successful loan spell. Vasco Seabra, who managed Fernandes during his time at Estoril, believes the player’s ceiling is exceptionally high. Speaking to Rádio Renascença, Seabra stated he “still doesn’t really know what level he will eventually stop at or stabilise at,” adding that Fernandes “seems to be one of those players who, the higher the level, the more value and quality he can add to a team.”
Seabra highlighted Fernandes’ technical ability and strong mentality, predicting a swift rise to prominence for the player. He also expressed surprise at the level of interest from clubs like Real Madrid, though he anticipated Fernandes would quickly reach the standard required for the Premier League. The Portuguese midfielder has consistently improved with each season, enhancing his reputation despite Estoril’s recent relegation to the Championship.
Meanwhile, United have reportedly ended their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, shifting their focus to bolstering other areas of the squad. The club are now prioritizing a move for Newcastle United full-back Lewis Hall, who is reportedly keen on a transfer to Old Trafford. Hall’s ability to play in the Champions League is a significant draw, although Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell following recent player sales. United have already made initial contact with Hall’s representatives, signalling their intent to secure his signature this summer.
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has also been linked with a move to United, with the player reportedly already speaking to several members of the Red Devils’ squad. Additionally, United are considering a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, as INEOS, the club’s new co-owners, explore potential additions to the squad.
