Manchester United are intensifying their pursuit of Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall after a potential move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde failed to materialise, according to reports. The Red Devils are prioritising a left-back over a left winger, despite previous interest in both positions.
United have already secured the signing of Mason Mount this summer and are aiming to add at least one more midfielder, with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes shaping up to be their second arrival. However, manager Erik ten Hag is also keen to strengthen the defence, particularly with a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw.
Initial reports suggested Barcelona’s Balde was a viable option, with Marca claiming the Spanish club were open to selling the player. However, Mundo Deportivo have refuted these claims, stating Balde is not for sale unless he actively seeks a transfer, and he has not indicated any desire to leave. This has prompted United to refocus their attention on Hall.
TEAMtalk understands that United are now preparing a concerted push to sign the 21-year-old, who is valued at £60 million by Newcastle. Sources at Old Trafford believe Hall would be open to the move, and personal terms are not expected to be a significant obstacle. Newcastle are reportedly reluctant to sell, but United are confident the situation is worth pursuing.
Hall has emerged as United’s preferred target after they opted against pursuing a deal for Bayern Munich-bound Nathaniel Brown. Patrick Dorgu was also considered, but is currently viewed as more of a winger prospect. The focus on Hall suggests United are seeking a ready-made solution at left-back, capable of providing both cover and competition for Shaw. Securing Hall would address a key area of the squad and provide long-term stability in a position where United have previously lacked depth.
