Manchester United are prepared to meet Newcastle United’s £100 million valuation of Sandro Tonali, with some figures within the Newcastle hierarchy now anticipating the Italian midfielder’s departure, according to reports from TuttoMercatoWeb and The Telegraph. The development comes as United seek to bolster their midfield options following a busy period of transfer activity.
Tonali arrived at St. James’ Park last summer for a reported £60 million from AC Milan, becoming a key component of Eddie Howe’s side. He made 34 appearances across all competitions, contributing four goals and one assist, and quickly established himself as a fan favourite. However, Newcastle may be willing to cash in on the 24-year-old to maintain financial stability and continue their squad rebuild.
United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen to add further quality to his midfield, with the club already linked with several targets. The potential sale of Tonali would free up significant funds for Newcastle to pursue their own transfer objectives, with the club already having identified potential replacements. The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reports that Newcastle’s succession planning is already underway, suggesting they are prepared for Tonali’s exit.
Michael Carrick is believed to be a strong advocate for Tonali’s acquisition, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, potentially influencing the club’s willingness to meet Newcastle’s asking price. While United had previously been linked with Elliot Anderson, currently at Manchester City, and faced obstacles in securing Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid, Tonali has emerged as a leading candidate. The club is reportedly prepared to offer the full £100 million to secure his services, signalling a strong intent to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season. This move could provide United with a dynamic and technically gifted midfielder capable of dictating play and contributing defensively.
