Manchester United are turning their attention to Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali after completing the signing of Ederson from Atalanta for a reported €45 million, including add-ons. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed all documentation for Ederson’s move to Old Trafford has been finalised, though the player won’t be officially registered until July.
The arrival of Ederson, who has agreed a five-year contract with the Red Devils, marks the first midfield addition for United this summer, with manager Erik ten Hag reportedly seeking at least two further reinforcements in that area. Tonali has emerged as a key target, with sources at CaughtOffside claiming United are ‘confident’ of securing his signature.
Tonali, 24, has been a regular fixture in Newcastle’s midfield since joining from AC Milan in 2023, contributing to their strong Premier League form and Champions League qualification. He has established himself as a dynamic and versatile player, capable of both defensive work and contributing to attacking phases. However, United are reportedly ‘ahead’ of other interested clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City, who are currently focused on alternative targets.
United are prepared to offer a package in the region of £70 million to £80 million for the Italian international, though Newcastle are believed to value him closer to £100 million. Negotiations are expected to be challenging, but United are willing to test Newcastle’s resolve.
Separately, Manchester United are also poised to benefit financially from a potential transfer involving former player Mason Greenwood. Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has stated that personal terms for a four-year deal with Greenwood have been agreed, and club-to-club talks with Marseille are imminent. A significant sell-on clause included in Greenwood’s move to Marseille two years ago would see United receive a substantial fee should he move to Turkey.
