West Ham United are increasingly confident of securing a £70million fee for midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, with Manchester United among a host of clubs expressing interest, according to TEAMtalk.
Fernandes, who joined the Hammers from Southampton for just over £40million last summer, has become a key player despite West Ham’s struggles this season and potential relegation from the Premier League. The club believes his performances have justified the investment made in his signing.
Despite West Ham’s precarious position in the league table, the 21-year-old’s composure, athleticism, and tactical intelligence in midfield have attracted attention from several top clubs. Manchester United have been monitoring Fernandes closely as they plan to strengthen their central midfield options ahead of Michael Carrick’s first full season in charge.
However, United face competition from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City, all of whom have made enquiries about Fernandes’ availability in recent weeks. Arsenal are reportedly drawn to his technical profile and versatility, while Chelsea view him as a young talent with high potential. Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, are also keen, appreciating his ability to play multiple midfield roles.
Interest extends beyond the Premier League, with Paris Saint-Germain also monitoring the situation, though West Ham’s valuation could prove a significant obstacle. The club are adamant they will not allow Fernandes to leave on the cheap, even if they are relegated, believing his status as a proven Premier League player maintains his value.
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that West Ham’s hierarchy believe Fernandes’ age, adaptation to the Premier League, and potential for growth justify their asking price. They feel he could develop into one of Europe’s elite central midfielders in the coming seasons, and the current market for young midfielders favors sellers.
