Manchester United are awaiting a response from Real Madrid regarding a potential move for midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, according to reports. INEOS are reportedly prepared to submit an opening bid for the France international, who has been identified as a key target to bolster the Red Devils’ midfield.
United previously pursued Tchouameni in June 2022, before he ultimately opted to join Real Madrid from Monaco. The 26-year-old has been considered a long-term solution to the defensive midfield position vacated by Casemiro’s departure. While United have explored other options, including Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, Tchouameni remains their priority.
Reports from Spain suggest Madrid are seeking a fee of €100m (£85m) for Tchouameni. However, the move hinges on whether Madrid are willing to sell the player, with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to retain him as part of a midfield rebuild. Respected United reporter Andy Mitten revealed on the Talk of the Devils podcast that Tchouameni is happy in Madrid, but would be open to a move to Old Trafford if the Spanish club indicate a willingness to sell.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United view Tchouameni as the “perfect signing” to replace Casemiro, possessing an “elite mentality” and “world class” qualities. A significant hurdle remains in matching Tchouameni’s current salary at Madrid, with United reportedly signalling they would require a renegotiated deal. Currently, United have not received any indication from Madrid that they are open to negotiations.
The situation is further complicated by Mourinho’s reported desire to keep Tchouameni at the Bernabeu. Should Madrid ultimately sanction a sale, and United are able to agree personal terms, the addition of Tchouameni would provide a significant upgrade in defensive midfield quality and long-term stability to Erik ten Hag’s squad.
