Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the club’s summer transfer business, totaling £127.5million, has been vindicated by their likely return to the Champions League next season. With two Premier League games remaining, United hold a six-point advantage over Liverpool, potentially needing only one more point to secure a top-four finish.
Hargreaves, speaking on TNT Sports, singled out goalkeeper Senne Lammens as the most impactful signing, citing his relatively low cost and the significant improvement he has brought to the team’s defensive stability. He argued that United identified goals as the key to climbing the table, leading to the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, both proven Premier League goalscorers.
Cunha and Mbeumo arrived for an initial combined fee of £127.5million, while Lammens joined for under £20million. The goalkeeper has kept seven clean sheets in his debut Premier League campaign, a factor former teammate Ally McCoist also emphasized, stating that Lammens has instilled confidence within the United defense.
McCoist explained that the arrival of a reliable goalkeeper addressed a clear lack of confidence in the team’s defensive setup, contributing significantly to their improved form. Hargreaves further stressed that securing a quality goalkeeper was crucial to United’s success, suggesting their top-four ambitions would have been jeopardized without it.
The signings have propelled Manchester United to a likely Champions League spot, marking a significant turnaround from last season when they were absent from European competition. The impact of Lammens, in particular, has been lauded as a key component of their resurgence, potentially laying the foundation for future success.
