Manchester United are shifting their focus away from a potential move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer, according to well-placed sources. The club is pursuing more prudent, value-driven alternatives as part of a midfield overhaul, with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson now prioritised.
United retain an admiration for the Italy international but view the deal as a costly proposition. Newcastle's expected asking price is believed to be between £80 million and £100 million, a fee reflecting their desire to keep the player, and Tonali's substantial wage demands would further stretch United's budget. Furthermore, The Athletic reported this week that the club privately harbours a concern over Tonali's past gambling ban, which saw him suspended for ten months.
Instead, the recruitment strategy is centering on younger, domestic talent. Adam Wharton, 22, has impressed at Crystal Palace with his composed, tempo-dictating performances, while Elliot Anderson has flourished at Nottingham Forest, showcasing energy and technical quality. Both players are seen as offering superior long-term value and would likely command more manageable fees than Tonali.
Sources indicate United are leaning towards securing one of Wharton or Anderson as a primary midfield reinforcement, potentially supplemented by further additions. This approach is designed to refresh the engine room and ease the burden on Kobbie Mainoo without overcommitting financial resources, aligning with a broader philosophy of sustainable squad building under the current regime.
The need for midfield reinforcements is clear, with Casemiro confirmed to be leaving and doubts persisting over the future of Manuel Ugarte. Player sales are expected to help fund United's summer business, which is being treated fluidly as the window approaches. Securing Champions League football would strengthen their negotiating position for all targets.
Meanwhile, Tonali's representatives are reportedly stepping up efforts to secure his exit from St James' Park, with contact made with Real Madrid. Manchester City and other top European sides are also understood to be interested in the midfielder.
