Manchester United’s pursuit of VfB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller has become more complicated with the expiration of his release clause on Wednesday, July 15th. The clause, valued at €36.5 million, allowed clubs to automatically secure Stiller’s services for a set fee, but now Stuttgart hold significantly more control over the player’s future, according to Sport Bild.
The expiration removes the relatively straightforward option of triggering the release to force a transfer, meaning any potential deal will now require direct negotiation with the Bundesliga club. Stuttgart had reportedly been prepared to potentially activate the clause themselves to remove any immediate threat of losing the player, but that is no longer necessary. This shifts the balance of power firmly in Stuttgart’s favour.
Stiller, 25, has become a key component of Stuttgart’s midfield since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2020. He made 32 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing three goals and two assists as Stuttgart finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the DFB-Pokal final. His performances have attracted attention from several top European clubs, with Manchester United among those consistently linked.
United scouts reportedly monitored Stiller extensively throughout the 2023-24 campaign as they assessed potential midfield reinforcements. The club are currently undergoing a rebuild under Erik ten Hag, and strengthening the midfield is considered a priority. Stiller’s technical ability, passing range, and defensive work rate align with the qualities Ten Hag seeks in a midfielder.
While the immediate release clause route is now closed, Sport Bild reports that a similar clause will reactivate in the summer of 2027, potentially offering another opportunity for interested clubs to sign the Germany international. Stiller is currently under contract with Stuttgart until 2028, providing the club with a strong negotiating position in the meantime. A successful transfer for Stiller now hinges on Manchester United’s willingness to meet Stuttgart’s valuation and agree to personal terms with the player.
