SC Freiburg forward Johan Manzambi has cast doubt over his future with the club following their 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa in the Europa League final. The 20-year-old, who enjoyed a breakout season for Freiburg, admitted he was unsure if he would play for the Bundesliga side again when questioned by Bild after the match.
Manzambi’s comments came despite having a contract with Freiburg that runs until 2030. He stated, “I honestly don’t know. My contract runs until 2030. We’ll see,” deferring further discussion until after his international commitments. The Switzerland international is currently preparing to represent his country at the upcoming World Cup.
During the 2025/26 season, Manzambi established himself as a key player for Freiburg, making 47 appearances across all competitions. He directly contributed to 16 goals, scoring seven and providing nine assists, becoming a focal point in their attack. His performances were particularly notable as Freiburg navigated a challenging Bundesliga campaign and ultimately reached the Europa League final.
Freiburg will be keen to retain Manzambi, especially given his age and potential for further development. However, his impressive form has inevitably attracted attention from other clubs across Europe, and his ambiguous response suggests he may be open to a move. The club’s ability to compete in the Champions League next season could be a significant factor in persuading him to stay, but his focus remains on the World Cup for now.
The forward joined Freiburg from Young Boys in 2024, quickly becoming a regular in the first team. His versatility, capable of playing as a winger or a central striker, has made him a valuable asset for coach Christian Streich. Should Manzambi ultimately decide to leave, Freiburg will likely demand a significant transfer fee for one of their most promising players. His departure would leave a void in their attack and necessitate the search for a suitable replacement.
