Milan have reached an agreement with Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, though final approval from owner Gerry Cardinale is still pending, according to reports in Italy. The 41-year-old is set to take charge after a lengthy search for a new head coach following the departure of Stefano Pioli.
This is not the first time Milan have pursued Amorim, with the club considering him as a potential replacement for Pioli last season. However, at that time, they were unwilling to meet his release clause of €11 million from Sporting Lisbona, opting instead for Paulo Fonseca. Amorim subsequently joined Manchester United in November 2024, but was dismissed in January after a difficult spell in England.
Recent discussions between Amorim and Milan’s leadership, including Cardinale, Ibrahimovic, and Calvelli, have led to a proposed two-year contract with an option for a third season, worth €3.5-4 million per year plus bonuses. The appointment has been positively received by Markus Krösche, a German director at Eintracht Frankfurt who is also a candidate for a technical director role at Milan.
Influential agent Jorge Mendes is believed to have played a role in pushing for Amorim’s appointment, and may also assist with potential player transfers, including the possible sale of Rafael Leao. Milan are also nearing an agreement to bring in Krösche as their new technical director, though a compensation fee of €5-6 million will be required to release him from his contract with Eintracht Frankfurt. Krösche is expected to then identify a sporting director, with Timmo Hardung and Devin Özek among the candidates.
The situation remains fluid given previous setbacks in Milan’s managerial search, but the latest developments suggest Amorim is the leading candidate to take the helm. His arrival would signal a shift in tactical approach for the club, with Amorim known for his attacking style of play demonstrated during his successful tenure at Sporting Lisbona, where he won two Portuguese league titles.
