Milan are actively pursuing several managerial candidates as they seek to appoint a new head coach before the start of next season, with Mauricio Pochettino and Matthias Jaissle among those under consideration. According to reports in Italy, Milan owner Gerry Cardinale and club officials met with Pochettino, the current head coach of the United States national team, last week to discuss a potential move.
Pochettino’s contract with the US Soccer Federation expires after the upcoming Copa America tournament, leaving the door open for a move to Europe. Cardinale is reportedly a strong admirer of the Argentinian coach, though he is not currently the frontrunner for the position. The meeting with Pochettino was first reported by The Athletic.
Ralf Rangnick, a target for the role of sporting director at Milan, has reportedly recommended Jaissle, the current manager of Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli, as a potential appointment. Jaissle, 38, previously managed Red Bull Salzburg and shares a connection with Rangnick through the Red Bull system. He has won back-to-back Asian Champions League titles with Al Ahli, where he also manages former Milan midfielder Franck Kessie.
Jaissle’s current contract with Al Ahli runs until 2027, and a move to Milan would likely involve a transfer fee. Other managers being considered by Milan include Andoni Iraola, currently managing Bournemouth, and Oliver Glasner, recently departed from Crystal Palace. Iraola’s candidacy appears to have cooled due to a lack of enthusiasm from the Spaniard, while Glasner is currently weighing his options after leaving Palace. Both Pochettino and Rangnick are currently occupied with international duties at the Copa America, adding a layer of complexity to the timeline.
Milan finished fourth in Serie A this season, qualifying for the Europa League. The club is aiming for a significant overhaul this summer, with Cardinale seeking a more attacking style of play and a clear long-term vision. The appointment of a new manager and sporting director are seen as crucial steps in achieving these goals.
