AC Milan have identified Arne Slot as their top candidate to become their new manager, according to French outlet Actu Foot. The development comes following Slot’s recent departure from Liverpool, where he spent one season in charge.
Slot, 47, was relieved of his duties at Liverpool after a campaign that saw the club finish fifth in the Premier League, reach the Champions League quarter-finals, and be eliminated in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He previously managed Feyenoord, leading them to an Eredivisie title. His dismissal has created a ripple effect, with Liverpool now reportedly close to appointing Andoni Iraola, who was also a target for Milan.
Milan had previously considered Iraola as a potential replacement for their current manager, and the pursuit of Slot suggests a shift in focus towards a manager with Premier League experience. The club had also been linked with Adi Hütter, and Oliver Glasner, with a meeting scheduled with the latter early next week, but Slot now appears to be the preferred option.
At Liverpool, Slot earned a reported £8 million per season, plus bonuses, a figure Milan would need to consider. The financial implications of hiring Slot could be significant, but his track record and tactical approach are believed to align with the club’s ambitions. Securing Slot would represent a statement of intent from Milan as they look to challenge for Serie A title and re-establish themselves as a European force.
The potential appointment of Slot could signal a move towards a more proactive and attacking style of play for Milan, mirroring the approach he implemented at both Feyenoord and Liverpool. His experience in developing young players could also be beneficial for the Rossoneri’s squad.
