AC Milan remain without a manager, sporting director, or technical director as of June 6th, according to reports in the Italian press. The club is currently operating with a severely depleted leadership structure, with team manager Marangon representing Milan at Serie A calendar launch events, highlighting the organizational chaos. Milan are yet to appoint an administrator, a sporting director, a technical director, a head coach, or even a chief scout.
The situation is complicated by ongoing disagreements regarding the club’s future leadership, particularly surrounding the potential appointment of Ralf Rangnick. It is understood that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is resistant to a “Rangnick-centric” Milan, a condition reportedly set by the German coach during discussions with RedBird Capital, the club’s ownership group.
Several managerial candidates have emerged, but each presents its own challenges. Arne Slot, previously a target, has reportedly withdrawn from consideration, preferring a sabbatical to joining the uncertain project at Milan. Mauricio Pochettino is fully focused on his role with the United States national team at the ongoing World Cup, while Matthias Jaissle would require a compensation payment to be released from his current contract with Al Ahli. Andoni Iraola, initially considered a top candidate, has already accepted a position at Liverpool.
Oliver Glasner, currently unattached, is now emerging as the leading candidate for the managerial role. His potential arrival is not contingent on Rangnick’s appointment. Glasner typically employs a 3-4-2-1 formation, which would not necessitate a complete overhaul of the existing squad. He is known for a more offensive, high-pressing style of play that emphasizes the players operating in the spaces behind the central striker, having previously developed Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace.
Despite Glasner’s growing prominence, the entire process remains stalled. Former manager Fabio Capello noted the lack of progress, highlighting the contrast with the clear chain of command present during his time at the club under Silvio Berlusconi, Adriano Galliani, and Ariedo Braida. The lack of decisive action is causing concern, as players are unlikely to wait indefinitely for clarity regarding the club’s future direction.
