Milan are continuing their search for a new manager and technical director, seventeen days after dismissing their previous leadership, with Oliver Glasner emerging as a leading candidate for the coaching role while Ralf Rangnick’s potential appointment remains uncertain. According to reports in the Italian press, the club is prioritizing the appointment of a technical director before finalizing a new manager.
Despite numerous meetings and video calls led by Gerry Cardinale and RedBird Capital Partners, no definitive decisions have been made regarding the club’s future leadership. Several candidates have been considered, including Ruben Amorim and Mauricio Pochettino, but Glasner is currently considered the frontrunner. Glasner, recently departed from Crystal Palace, has indicated he is seeking a “perfect” fit for his next role, stating in an interview with Austrian newspapers Kronen Zeitung and Oberösterreichischen Nachrichten that he will announce his decision when the time is right.
Negotiations with Rangnick, the current manager of the Austrian national team, have reportedly stalled. While a meeting took place nine days ago in Vienna between Rangnick and Milan representatives, including Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, no agreement was reached. Milan reportedly have concerns about Rangnick’s availability due to his commitments with Austria, who are preparing for a major tournament, and his insistence on significant control over sporting decisions. Rangnick, known as “The Professor” in his home country, is also wary of potential interference in his work and unfulfilled promises.
The Austrian Football Association is actively attempting to retain Rangnick, offering him a contract extension. Josef Pröll, the association’s president, expressed optimism that Rangnick will remain with the national team, stating they have open communication and mutual trust. A potential combination of Glasner as manager and Rangnick as technical director is still being considered by Milan, as it would provide a unified vision for the club’s revival after two consecutive seasons outside of the Champions League. The club is aiming for a long-term project focused on establishing a consistent footballing philosophy.
