Monaco are set to trigger their €11 million option to buy Ansu Fati from FC Barcelona, according to L’Équipe. The 23-year-old Spanish international has impressed during his loan spell with the Ligue 1 club, despite limited playing time, and both parties are keen to finalize a permanent transfer.
Fati has scored ten league goals in just 964 minutes of Ligue 1 football, demonstrating a remarkable efficiency for Monaco. Several of his goals have proven crucial, including the winner against Metz on Saturday which keeps alive Monaco’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. He also scored twice in both matches against Metz this season, as well as goals against Lens, Rennes, and in the derby against Nice.
The option to buy was negotiated as part of the loan agreement last summer. Monaco recognize the value of the deal, particularly given the current financial challenges facing French football with television rights. Fati himself is reportedly happy in Monaco, feeling well-supported by the club and has formed a close relationship with Paul Pogba, who has acted as a mentor and friend.
While his defensive contribution remains an area for development, Fati has shown significant improvement in this aspect of his game since arriving in October. He believes a full pre-season with Monaco will allow him to reach his full potential. Manager Sébastien Pocognoli has only started Fati ten times across all competitions since his arrival, but the player appears committed to establishing himself in the team.
The primary obstacle to completing the transfer is Fati’s salary. Despite taking a significant pay cut before joining Monaco on loan, his reported net salary of €4.6 million remains higher than any other player at the club. Monaco currently cover only half of Fati’s wages. Negotiations are expected to focus on whether Fati and his representatives will agree to a further reduction in his earnings, but his desire to stay at the club suggests a compromise can be reached. A meeting between all parties is scheduled to take place soon.
