Jeremy Monga, the 16-year-old Leicester City winger, is reportedly open to a move to Arsenal, dealing a setback to Manchester United’s pursuit of the England Under-19 international. The news comes as Leicester prepare to sell Monga following their relegation to League One, with several top clubs expressing interest in the promising youngster.
According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Monga is receptive to joining Arsenal, who recently completed a successful season under manager Mikel Arteta, winning the Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final. Arsenal have been in talks with Leicester regarding a potential transfer in recent weeks, indicating a serious intent to secure Monga’s signature.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reports that Arsenal will likely need to pay in excess of £10 million to acquire the winger, with the possibility of the fee being determined by a tribunal should negotiations stall. Leicester City have reportedly received as many as eight formal inquiries from clubs across England and Europe, highlighting the widespread interest in Monga’s talent.
Monga is yet to sign a professional contract, with his 17th birthday – and the opportunity to do so – coming on July 10th. Manchester United, under manager Michael Carrick, were also keen on the player, particularly with their return to Champions League football next season. However, Monga’s preference for a move to the Emirates Stadium presents a significant challenge to their ambitions. The competition from Manchester City was also noted, but Arsenal appear to be leading the race at this stage.
Securing Monga would represent a significant coup for Arsenal, adding a highly-rated young talent to their squad. For Leicester, the sale will provide a valuable financial boost as they rebuild in League One. The outcome of this transfer could signal a shift in the landscape for young English talent, with Arsenal positioning themselves as an attractive destination for promising players.
