Jose Mourinho will have the final say on the future of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia, potentially dealing a blow to Newcastle United’s hopes of signing the Spaniard in the summer of 2026. Newcastle have identified Garcia as a ‘serious option’ to bolster their attacking options, with the club’s recruitment staff believing he possesses the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.
According to TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are actively pursuing Garcia as a potential long-term solution up front, aiming to fill the void left by current forwards. The 22-year-old is currently second choice at Real Madrid behind Kylian Mbappe, but his situation could change with the planned return of Brazilian forward Endrick from his loan spell at Lyon next season.
Madrid are reportedly unwilling to let Garcia leave for less than €60 million (£52m, $70.4m), according to Spanish publication AS. However, the club’s president Florentino Perez will defer to Mourinho’s judgement regarding the player’s role in the squad. Mourinho is widely expected to return to the Bernabeu as manager, having reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the club.
AS journalist Tomas Roncero expressed his desire for Garcia to remain with Real Madrid, highlighting his skills and status as a product of the club’s youth academy. Roncero acknowledged that Endrick’s return complicates matters, but believes Garcia ‘deserves’ to stay if he impresses Mourinho. The Portuguese manager’s assessment will be crucial in determining whether Garcia remains in Madrid or becomes available for transfer, potentially opening the door for Newcastle to make a move.
Should Garcia become available, Newcastle will likely face competition from other clubs, but their early interest positions them well to potentially secure his signature. The outcome of Mourinho’s evaluation will significantly impact both Garcia’s career trajectory and Newcastle’s summer transfer plans.
