Jose Mourinho has been granted increased authority over player recruitment at Real Madrid, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City’s Ruben Dias identified as key targets, according to ESPN. This development follows a meeting on June 9th at the Hotel Santo Mauro involving Mourinho, director general Jose Angel Sanchez, chief scout Juni Calafat, and agent Jorge Mendes to outline the club’s summer transfer strategy.
The shift signifies a change in approach for Real Madrid, where previous managers like Carlo Ancelotti experienced delays or rejections of transfer requests. Mourinho is now positioned as the primary architect of recruitment, influencing target identification, prioritization, and the speed of negotiations. This is reflected in the club’s recent signings, with Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, and Ibrahima Konate averaging nearly 29 years of age, a departure from the club’s previous focus on younger players.
Enzo Fernandez, the 24-year-old Argentinian midfielder, is a top priority for Mourinho. While Fernandez has expressed interest in joining Real Madrid, a significant gap exists between Chelsea’s asking price of around €138 million and Madrid’s preference to pay under €100 million plus bonuses. Should a deal for Fernandez prove unattainable, West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being considered as an alternative.
Ruben Dias, the 27-year-old Manchester City centre-back, is being targeted to bolster Real Madrid’s defense. With Antonio Rudiger nearing 33 and Eder Militao’s injury concerns, Mourinho seeks an experienced defensive anchor alongside Konate. Alternatives such as Alessandro Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck are also being evaluated, but Dias is reportedly the preferred option. Manchester City’s willingness to sell, and agreeing on a fee of around £65 million, remains a key obstacle.
Mourinho’s influence has already yielded quick results, with the swift acquisition of Cucurella, the securing of Silva, and the signing of Konate. The club is also considering terminating Dani Ceballos’ contract early to manage the wage bill. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has also expressed interest in Julian Alvarez, but negotiations are contingent on Vinicius Junior’s contract extension talks, which are currently paused until after the World Cup.
The next step will be whether Real Madrid submits formal bids for Fernandez or Dias, and whether Chelsea and Manchester City are willing to negotiate their valuations to facilitate a deal before the transfer window closes.
