Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, with the club reportedly optimistic of completing a deal, according to journalist Ben Jacobs. The pursuit of the Swiss international comes after Newcastle reached an agreement for Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Touré, signaling an active transfer window for the Magpies.
Initial links between Manzambi and Newcastle emerged four days ago, as reported by the Daily Mail, but discussions have progressed quickly in recent days. The 20-year-old has been a key figure for Switzerland at the ongoing World Cup, contributing three goals and one assist in three appearances, potentially raising his profile and attracting interest from other clubs.
Newcastle’s ability to pursue Manzambi is significantly bolstered by recent player sales. The club recently agreed to sell Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona for a reported €80 million, and Sandro Tonali is nearing a move to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of €117 million, including add-ons. These departures have created substantial financial resources for manager Eddie Howe to strengthen his squad.
Freiburg may be reluctant to part with Manzambi at this stage of the season, particularly while he is representing Switzerland at the World Cup. The tournament provides a platform for the young midfielder to further showcase his abilities and potentially increase his market value. However, Newcastle’s financial power and the opportunity to play in the Premier League could prove persuasive.
Manzambi has steadily developed into a promising talent in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, demonstrating both goal-scoring ability and creative passing. His arrival at St. James’ Park would provide competition and depth in midfield, potentially allowing Howe to rotate his squad effectively throughout the season. The addition of Manzambi would further solidify Newcastle’s ambitions to compete at the highest level of English football.
