Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from French Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims for a reported fee of €28.5 million. The 20-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with the Premier League club, officially joining the Magpies with immediate effect.
Jaouen arrives at St. James’ Park as the most expensive player in Ligue 2 history, a testament to his impressive form for Reims. Last season, the French youth international kept 15 clean sheets, establishing himself as a key figure in the Reims squad. Canal+ first reported an agreement between the clubs several days prior to the official announcement.
The move represents a significant investment for Newcastle, but one that manager Eddie Howe believes is worthwhile. Howe expressed his delight at securing Jaouen’s signature, highlighting the goalkeeper’s potential for growth within the Newcastle environment. He anticipates Jaouen will develop alongside current number one Nick Pope, providing healthy competition for the starting role.
Jaouen himself expressed his excitement about joining Newcastle, stating he is “really excited to become a Newcastle player.” He also voiced his eagerness to develop alongside the club’s “incredible players and staff.” The young keeper described himself as a “modern goalkeeper,” comfortable playing with the ball at his feet and excelling in one-on-one situations.
This transfer indicates Newcastle’s continued ambition to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for top honors. While Pope remains the established first choice, bringing in a promising talent like Jaouen provides long-term security and depth in a crucial position. The signing also demonstrates the club’s willingness to invest in young players with high potential, aligning with their overall strategy.
