Nico Paz has informed Real Madrid of his desire to stay at Como 1907 for another season, reversing previous plans for a return to Spain this summer, according to Diario AS. The 21-year-old Argentine midfielder has communicated his decision directly to the Real Madrid leadership, with Como set to compete in the Champions League next season.
This decision represents a shift from earlier reports indicating a near-certain activation of Madrid’s €9 million buy-back option for the 2026-27 season, with personal terms previously thought to be agreed upon. However, recent changes at Real Madrid, including presidential elections and the appointment of José Mourinho, have altered the situation for Paz and his representatives.
According to AS, initial discussions between Paz and Madrid’s leadership suggested a 2026 return was likely before the recent changes at the club. The arrival of Mourinho, who could not guarantee Paz regular playing time, effectively diminished the prospect of a central role within the team. Como’s qualification for the Champions League provides a platform for continued development and consistent playing time, which the player’s camp had identified as essential.
Como president Dennis Wise previously stated that Real Madrid retain the right to recall Paz at any time, but emphasized the player’s preference would be a key factor. That preference has now been made clear. Paz’s contract with the Serie A club runs until 2028, providing Como with security regardless of Madrid’s future actions.
Real Madrid have three buy-back options: €8 million in 2025 – now expired – €9 million in 2026, which has now lapsed, and €10 million in 2027, valid until June 30, 2027. AS reports that Real Madrid are not currently considering a third-party transfer for Paz at this stage. The situation mirrors that of Julián Álvarez, whose own preferences influenced Atlético Madrid’s summer plans.
The next key date is June 2027, when Madrid’s €10 million buy-back option expires. Paz’s performances for Como in Serie A and the Champions League, as well as any potential appearances for Argentina, will determine whether Real Madrid exercise that final clause or allow his registration to remain with the Italian club.
