Alexander Nübel is returning to Bayern Munich after a three-year loan spell with VfB Stuttgart, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday. The 29-year-old goalkeeper will rejoin his parent club, where officials have indicated their intention to sell him during the current transfer window.
Nübel initially joined Stuttgart in 2021 on a loan deal from Bayern, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the Swabian club. He went on to make 129 appearances across all competitions, playing a pivotal role in Stuttgart’s resurgence as a European competitor. The club secured three consecutive seasons of European football during his tenure, including participation in both the Champions League and Europa League, culminating in a DFB-Pokal victory in 2023.
VfB Stuttgart’s board member for sport, Fabian Wohlgemuth, praised Nübel’s contributions, stating that the goalkeeper consistently delivered both on and off the pitch and was instrumental in the club’s positive development. Wohlgemuth expressed the club’s gratitude for Nübel’s commitment and wished him well in his future endeavors. Nübel himself described his time at Stuttgart as “sensational,” highlighting the warm welcome he received from the team and the fans, as well as the memorable successes achieved during his spell.
Nübel’s career began at SC Paderborn before a move to Schalke 04 in 2015. He earned recognition as one of the Bundesliga’s most promising goalkeepers during his time with Schalke, attracting the attention of Bayern Munich. However, he struggled to dislodge Manuel Neuer as the club’s number one and subsequently agreed to the loan move to Stuttgart to gain regular playing time.
With Neuer still the established goalkeeper at Bayern, and Yann Sommer having recently signed a contract extension, Nübel’s return to Munich is expected to be short-lived. Several clubs are reportedly interested in acquiring the German international, and his sale would provide Bayern with additional funds for other transfer targets. This move allows Nübel to seek a club where he can secure a starting position and continue his development.
