André Onana has rejoined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Manchester United, the Turkish club confirmed on Friday. The 30-year-old goalkeeper will again represent Trabzonspor, having previously spent the 2023-24 season with the Süper Lig side. Trabzonspor announced the move with a video styled after the film Black Panther.
Onana initially joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 from Inter Milan, arriving as a replacement for David de Gea. His time at Old Trafford proved inconsistent, with a challenging first season followed by a decline in form during the 2024-25 campaign, leading to increased criticism from supporters. He made 33 appearances for Trabzonspor during his initial loan spell, helping the club secure the Turkish Cup – his first trophy since winning the FA Cup with Manchester United in 2024.
The Cameroon international, who has 53 caps for his country, will be hoping to rediscover his form in familiar surroundings. Trabzonspor were reportedly keen to re-sign Onana following his successful loan period last season, and the move provides the player with regular first-team football. The loan deal does not include an option for Trabzonspor to make the transfer permanent.
This move allows Manchester United to free up wages and potentially reassess their goalkeeping options, with Dean Henderson and Altay Bayındır already on the books. Onana’s return to Turkey offers a chance for him to rebuild confidence and potentially reignite his career, while providing Trabzonspor with an experienced shot-stopper as they aim to compete both domestically and in European competitions.
