Joao Palhinha has reportedly agreed to a return to Sporting CP, casting doubt on Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of securing his services permanently this summer. The Portuguese midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell with Spurs, playing a key role in their Premier League survival, finishing just two points above the relegation zone.
Palhinha scored the winning goal in Tottenham’s crucial final-day victory against Everton, adding to a season of important contributions, including a winner against Wolves earlier in the campaign. Tottenham held a £26million option to buy the 28-year-old, and were keen to trigger it, but according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Palhinha is prioritizing a move back to his former club. He is even prepared to accept a reduced salary to facilitate the transfer.
Sporting CP are currently seeking a financial solution to negotiate a deal with Bayern Munich, Palhinha’s parent club. While other Portuguese clubs, including Porto and Benfica, have also expressed interest, sources at TEAMtalk believe Palhinha is leaning towards a return to Sporting.
Despite this, TEAMtalk reports that there is a belief within Tottenham that Palhinha will ultimately remain in North London. The club views him as a crucial component of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans for next season, hoping he will provide stability in midfield during what is expected to be a rebuilding phase. Tottenham are prioritizing the move and were unaware of Palhinha’s desire to return home. Should Palhinha join Sporting, it would represent a significant setback for De Zerbi’s squad overhaul.
