Pochettino denies Real Madrid contact but leaves future open
USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied any recent contact from Real Madrid regarding their managerial position, but left the door open for a potential move after the 2026 World Cup. The Argentine, whose contract with the US national team expires after the tournament, was asked about links to the Spanish giants during a press conference on Monday.
Pochettino, who was a candidate for the Real Madrid job in 2021, is one of several names linked to the post, alongside Unai Emery and Jurgen Klopp. The 54-year-old is currently focused on leading the host nation in this summer's World Cup, with his contract set to conclude after the tournament.
When questioned about the links to the Bernabeu, Pochettino stated, 'No, at the moment, no, I think we are very, very focused.' He emphasized his current commitment, saying, 'I’m fully focused here. I think everyone knows that I am committed with the national team here.'
However, the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager did not rule out a future move, adding, 'We are open, we don't have a contract for the future, but why not if we are happy and the federation is happy.'
Meanwhile, speculation over the Real Madrid job has been complicated by the recent form of interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa. The former Real Madrid player has reportedly won over the dressing room and is gaining support for the permanent position following recent victories, including wins over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, strengthening his case to be appointed permanently.
