Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro is nearing an agreement on a new contract with the club, effectively ending recent speculation linking him with a move to Manchester City, according to reports in Spain. AS reports that Tottenham have responded ‘swiftly and decisively’ to City’s interest, with both the club and Porro’s representatives close to reaching an agreement.
Manchester City, through director of football Hugo Viana, were reportedly keen on signing the 26-year-old, with a potential asking price of £50 million cited. However, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear he views Porro as a crucial player and has successfully convinced both the club’s hierarchy and the player himself to commit to an extension.
Porro joined Tottenham from Sporting CP in January 2023, initially on loan before making the move permanent in the summer. He quickly established himself as a key component of the team, contributing with both his defensive work and attacking prowess. Last season saw him feature prominently under Ange Postecoglou, and he is now set to be a focal point of De Zerbi’s rebuild.
Earlier this month, Real Madrid had also been mentioned as potential suitors for Porro, but they ultimately secured a deal for Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan. The swift action by Tottenham to secure Porro’s future demonstrates the club’s commitment to retaining key assets under De Zerbi’s leadership. The new contract is expected to make Porro one of the highest-paid players in the Tottenham squad, reflecting his importance to the team’s ambitions. This development provides stability to the right-back position and allows De Zerbi to focus on further strengthening the squad ahead of the new season.
