Barcelona forward Raphinha has publicly criticized a journalist for repeatedly publishing inaccurate reports regarding his future at the club. The Brazilian international has been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia this summer, a narrative he disputes as fabricated.
The criticism comes amid a trend of Barcelona players directly addressing media speculation, following similar statements from Frenkie de Jong. Reports suggesting Raphinha would consider a move to Saudi Arabia have surfaced for the past three summers, stemming from an earlier admission by the player that he had contemplated leaving, though his partner recently dismissed such claims.
Speaking to ESPN, as quoted by MD, Raphinha stated, “Since I arrived at Barcelona, from day one there has been speculation about my leaving the club. I think people don’t like seeing me here. Especially the press… there’s one who does nothing but lie.” He further elaborated that the journalist in question has previously published false information about meetings with the club and his internal deliberations regarding his future, characterizing the reporting as consistently inaccurate and irrelevant.
Raphinha recently returned to the Barcelona squad after recovering from a hamstring tear sustained during the March international break. He is aiming to be available for selection in El Clasico against Real Madrid on Sunday, a match where Barcelona could secure the La Liga title. The extent of his playing time will depend on manager Hansi Flick’s assessment of his fitness.
Raphinha joined Barcelona from Leeds United in 2022 for a reported fee of €58 million. He has become a key player for the Catalan side, contributing goals and assists in both La Liga and the Champions League. While the club may face financial pressures, Raphinha has consistently expressed his desire to remain at the Camp Nou, despite ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
